Apprenticeship

Program

Following the 1-month trekking guide training program provided by Empowering Women of Nepal (EWN), trainees are given the opportunity to join a 5-month apprenticeship program at 3 Sisters Adventure Trekking.

3 Sisters Adventure Trekking provides for all of its trainees:

  • a supportive, paid apprenticeship training program

  • guaranteed field experience after completion of training

  • insurance cover

  • adequate equipment and clothing on loan. Advice during and after training is given concerning appropriate trekking equipment, but it is the responsibility of the trainees to borrow all necessary equipment before their treks, to be returned after the trek is over.  3 Sisters does not take any responsibility for trainees who fail to borrow the right equipment.

The trainee guides who join the apprenticeship program are paid wages as trekking assistants (porters) while also gaining relevant field-experience and improving their skills. To encourage and support the women, their wages are on a par with their more experienced male counterparts. We pay the highest amount that the local economy allows and it adequately covers all their trekking expenses, plus allows for savings.

3 Sisters Adventure Trekking also provides financial assistance to EWN as a business sponsor. A combination of this and individual private donations enables EWN to finance the female trekking guide training program without requiring funding from external donor organizations.
